The single-hung, also known as single-sash, window is made up of two pieces, or sashes. The bottom piece can slide up and down, while the top piece is fixed. It is set vertically, creating a rectangular frame with a locking mechanism in the middle on top of the lower sash. This means you can open the bottom piece of the window to allow airflow, but the top piece remains anchored.
This simple, compact solution can work well for both a Western Washington farmhouse and a Western Washington city home. It offers an excellent price point, easy installation, and with fewer openings and moving parts, fewer opportunities for heat or cold to escape, making them slightly more energy efficient.

"We had a great experience with our rep, Summer Million. She explained the different options available after asking what our needs and preferences were, and took the time to answer all of our questions. Pella doors and windows are beautiful and well-made. I highly recommend them and Summer if you are in the market for doors or windows."
"When it came time to replace my windows and doors, I contacted Pella. I knew they had a great product and competitive prices. What I didn't know was how well I'd be taken care of. Jon Carter met with me after work and spent a couple hours explaining their product and various choices I had. He helped me design new window placements and was so helpful and patient while I made the right choices for my home. Because of Jon's outstanding customer service, I feel confident with my choices and can't wait for my project to begin! Thank you Jon and Pella Windows!"
"...Kristen arrived promptly as scheduled, had detailed knowledge, and comfortably answered lots of questions. Code issues, energy efficiency, the range of materials options and their pros and cons, and design choices were all discussed. Her understanding of the product features and installation process, financing options and warranties were all clear. At the same appointment she walked through and took measurements and provided a quote before she left. She checked back with us on added questions and answered them all promptly and with no pressure. We did explore other options - some higher priced, some lower, all with some confusion and frustration. We are pleased to have selected Pella Impervia (fiberglass) and even more pleased to be working with Kristen to get this project completed."
"So professional on every front. From the estimate through the installation, the communication and professionalism was the best that I’ve seen! Every time I walk in my house and I see these beautiful new windows. I know that I am going to be comfortable in an amazing environment that is nice and quiet. Thank you, Pella!"
"We had Pella windows of NW WA replace two of our bay windows with new Impervia full pane windows as well as our kitchen, office, bedrooms and a new patio door on a small deck off our upstairs bedroom. Our views have vastly improved without all the frames.
The Pella team was so impressive and amazingly quick with the removal of the two bay window structures and replacing not only the old windows with beautiful new windows but the workmanship of replacing siding, trim and the caulking finish as well as the beautiful interior casings and trim with caulking finish was really incredible. They installed eight windows and one patio door in one and a half days. Very professional and very clean work. Thanks Pella!"
"Maks and Ian were stellar installers that took care to ensure the work was top notch, the house was kept clean and safe, and they communicated with us throughout the entire project. I have had many contractors in my home, these two are welcome back anytime I need their master craftsmen skillsets!"
"On Thursday, October 10, a technician from your company arrived to make the repairs on my Pella sliding door. Having nothing better to do, I hung around and watched Jesse work. I was VERY impressed at Jesse’s attention to detail, his knowledge of making the repairs and his craftsmanship in making the repairs. He answered all my questions, was friendly and helpful. As a result of his work, the door is now working as good as new! It was a pleasure meeting and having Jesse in my home and just wanted to let you know what an asset he is to your company."
Single-hung windows are an older style of window that the double-hung window has been increasingly replacing, but they are still available and there is still some demand.
Single-hung windows do have some benefits. They are typically less expensive than double-hung windows. They are more energy-efficient, making them better at keeping heat inside your home during cold winters and keeping heat out of your home during hot, humid Western Washington summers. They are sometimes not quite as easy to clean, and they don’t offer the same airflow flexibility as double-hung windows.
Single-hung windows can come in any of the grid styles, or grilles, available for double-hung. These include a farmhouse, Victorian, prairie, 6-lite prairie, craftsman and colonial, to name just a few.
